FAQ

Maine Coon Kitten Questions and Answers

What families ask us about our kittens and about living with a Maine Coon.

Buying a Kitten

01

How do I choose a Maine Coon kitten?

Look through the available kittens, each with photos and a description of their personality, then send us an inquiry through the contact form. If you are not sure which kitten would suit your home, tell us about your family and we will help you choose.

02

How do I reserve a kitten?

Fill in and sign our kitten contract online with the kitten's name. A reservation deposit holds your kitten and is applied to its price; our price page has the figures.

03

How old are your kittens when they go home?

At 9 weeks. By then each kitten has seen our vet, is spayed or neutered, microchipped, dewormed and vaccinated for its age, and is ready for the trip to your home.

04

Can I ask questions before I reserve?

Yes, please do. Send a message through the contact form or email ccasscooncats@gmail.com about a kitten, delivery or the breed itself.

05

Are your kittens raised in cages?

No. Our kittens are born and raised inside our home in Jamul, around our children and our dog, and they are handled every day. That is how they learn to be relaxed, sociable cats.

06

Are your kittens spayed or neutered?

Yes. Every kitten is spayed or neutered before going home, as well as vet checked, vaccinated for their age, dewormed and microchipped.

07

Do you sell kittens for breeding?

No. We place our kittens as family companions only, which is why every kitten is already spayed or neutered when it leaves us.

08

Can I visit your cattery?

We keep a closed cattery to protect young kittens while their immune systems develop, so visits to our home in Jamul are arranged once you have chosen and reserved a kitten. Families who live nearby are welcome to pick their kitten up in person.

09

What if the kitten I want is reserved?

Reserved kittens stay on the available kittens page with a Reserved label. Tell us what you are hoping for (color, boy or girl, and when) and we will let you know when a kitten like that is ready.

10

Where are you located?

In Jamul, California, in San Diego County, about 25 minutes east of downtown San Diego. Families can pick up from our home, meet us at San Diego International Airport (SAN), book a flight nanny or arrange ground transport. More about us as Maine Coon breeders.

Price

01

How much is a Maine Coon kitten?

Each kitten's price is on its card on the available kittens page, and our price page explains what is included.

02

What is included with my kitten?

Every kitten goes home with a vet examination a few days before going home, the spay or neuter surgery, already done, a microchip, FVRCP vaccinations (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia) for the kitten's age, deworming, a vaccination record, a health certificate, a written contract with the health guarantee, and a travel carrier.

03

How much does delivery cost?

It depends on how your kitten travels, and it is separate from the kitten's price. Our price page lists the delivery fees, and picking up in Jamul costs nothing extra.

04

What does a Maine Coon cost to keep?

Plan for good food (a Maine Coon eats more than an average cat), litter, a large litter box, a sturdy cat tree, combs, routine vet care and boosters, and pet insurance if you want it. Big cats need big, sturdy gear, so budget for things that last.

Getting Your Kitten Home

01

How does my kitten get to me?

Four ways: pick up from our home in Jamul, fly in to San Diego and take your kitten home in the cabin, book a flight nanny who carries your kitten in the cabin to your airport, or use ground transport if you are within driving range. The delivery page explains each one.

02

Do you ship kittens in cargo?

Never. A kitten that flies always travels in the cabin, in an airline-approved carrier under the seat, with you or with a flight nanny.

03

When is travel arranged?

Once your kitten is paid for, we choose a travel date together and book the flight, the nanny or the transport slot. If travel conditions change, we tell you straight away and agree a new date.

04

What should I do on the first day?

Keep it calm. Start your kitten in one quiet room with the litter box, food, water and somewhere to hide, and let them explore the rest of the house over the next few days. Offer the same food they already know, keep visitors few, and book your own vet visit within 3 days.

Health Guarantee

01

Do your kittens have a health guarantee?

Yes. Every kitten comes with a written 1-year genetic health guarantee. If your cat becomes ill with a covered genetic condition during that year, the guarantee applies as the contract sets out. The full terms are on our health guarantee page.

02

Do I need to take my kitten to my own vet?

Yes. Book a general examination with your own licensed veterinarian within 3 days of bringing your kitten home. A written note from your vet is needed to validate the health guarantee.

The Breed

01

How big do Maine Coons get?

Big for a cat: males often weigh about 13 to 18 pounds and females about 8 to 12, and they keep filling out until they are three to five years old. How big Maine Coons get.

02

How long do Maine Coons live?

About 10 to 13 years is a fair expectation. Large studies of cats seen by vets in the UK put the breed's average a little below that of cats in general, so a healthy weight and regular checkups matter. How long Maine Coons live.

03

Are Maine Coons good with children and other pets?

Usually, yes. Maine Coons are friendly, patient and sociable, and most get along well with respectful children, cat-friendly dogs and other cats. Ours grow up with children and a dog. The Maine Coon personality.

04

Are Maine Coons hypoallergenic?

No. No cat breed is truly hypoallergenic, and Maine Coons have a lot of coat to shed. Maine Coons, allergies and shedding.

05

Do Maine Coons need a lot of grooming?

Less than you might think: a good comb-through two or three times a week, more during the spring and fall sheds. The coat is silky and tends not to mat badly if you keep up with it. Grooming a Maine Coon.

06

Can a Maine Coon live in an apartment?

Yes, happily, with tall, sturdy places to climb, daily play and company. Maine Coons are big and social rather than hyper, so space to stretch out matters more than square footage.
