Maine Coon Kittens for Sale in Maine
For families in Portland, the Midcoast, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn.
If you live in Maine, you already know the cat. The Maine Coon was made the state cat in 1985, and the breed grew up in this kind of weather: long winters, drifting snow, old farmhouses and barns. That history is nice to know, but what matters is the practical side of sharing a modern home with a big, shaggy, talkative cat. These pages cover how that looks from Casco Bay to the Kennebec to the Penobscot.
Cass Coon Cats raises Maine Coons at home in Jamul, California, and Maine is well within reach, from the Midcoast to Lewiston-Auburn. Every kitten is vet checked, vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered before going home, with a 1-year written genetic health guarantee.

Maine Coon Life Across Maine
Portland
Portland living means a lot of apartments in the Old Port, the West End and Munjoy Hill, plus triple-deckers and converted houses in Deering and Back Cove. Check your lease for pet rules before committing. Many of these older buildings have tall windows, which is a gift for a cat who likes to watch gulls and passing traffic from a high perch.
The Midcoast
From Brunswick and Bath up through Damariscotta, Rockland and Camden, homes tend to be older, with drafty corners, woodstoves and lots of windows facing the water. A Maine Coon will find the warmest spot in the house within a day, usually beside the stove. Put a screen in front of any open fire, and offer a heated bed on cold nights.
Bangor
Bangor and the towns around it, such as Brewer, Orono and Hampden, have a mix of college rentals, ranch homes and farmhouses on larger lots. Winters are long and the snow stays, which means the cat spends a lot of months indoors. Plenty of climbing, a window feeder outside the glass, and a daily play session keep the energy in check.
Lewiston-Auburn
Lewiston and Auburn have a lot of multi-family buildings and older mill-district apartments, along with houses in the surrounding towns of Lisbon and Turner. Apartments with radiators or baseboard heat get very dry in January, so keep a water fountain going and comb the coat often to prevent static tangles in the fur.
The Part That Surprises Maine Cat Owners
Dry heat and static in winter
Heating a house for five months of the year pulls moisture out of the air, and long fur in dry air picks up static and mats behind the ears, under the legs and along the britches. Comb more often in January and February, run a humidifier if you can, and trim any small knots before they tighten into a mat.
Ticks, even in cold country
Deer ticks are a real concern in Maine, and Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses have been reported across the state. An indoor Maine Coon can still meet a tick if it hitches a ride on a dog or on your clothes after a walk in the woods. Check coats after outdoor trips and ask your vet about preventives. Early removal matters.
Ice storms and long power cuts
Ice and heavy wet snow bring down limbs and lines, and rural parts of the state can be without power for days. A Maine Coon can handle a cool house, but plan for it: keep a large carrier, extra food and a warm blanket handy, and know which room holds heat best. Keep the cat away from woodstove tops. Do this before the first storm of the season.
Keeping a Maine Coon Happy in Maine
Maine is where the breed makes the most sense. The thick, water-resistant coat, the tufted paws and the big ruff were all suited to cold, and a Maine Coon is usually most active when the weather turns. That does not mean the work is lighter, though. The coat sheds heavily in spring as the winter undercoat comes out, and again in fall, so expect to comb every other day in those weeks. These are slow-growing cats, and a male may still be filling out at four or five years old. Buy a cat tree that can hold him, with a heavy base and room at the top to stretch. Maine Coons dislike being left alone for long days, so a second cat or a household with people home suits them. They get along with dogs and children well, as long as everyone is gentle.

What Maine Families Ask Us
01Is a Maine Coon really a good fit for a Maine winter?
They handle cold well, thanks to the dense coat, but they are still indoor cats and should live inside your warm home. What a Maine winter does change is grooming: dry air and static tangle the fur, so comb more often and keep fresh water out. A cat who sleeps near the woodstove still needs a safe distance from it.
02Is it true the Maine Coon is Maine's state cat?
Yes. The legislature named the Maine Coon the official state cat in 1985. The breed developed in Maine and New England, which is why its coat and build suit the climate. The exact origin stories you hear are largely folklore, so enjoy them for fun, but the history of the cat living in Maine barns and homes is well established.
03Will my kitten travel in the cargo hold?
Never. From Portland, about 3,110 miles away by road, we plan the trip as a flight, and the kitten stays in the cabin the whole way: under the seat in front of a flight nanny, or in front of you if you fly in and collect it.
