Raising a Maine Coon Around Florida

Miami

Miami is condo country, from Brickell high-rises to Coral Gables and Kendall townhomes. Many buildings have pet registration, weight limits or board approval, so ask the association before you fall for a kitten. Glass balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows are a plus, but keep balcony doors closed, because a big, curious cat can slip through a gap.

Tampa

Tampa Bay homes range from bungalows in Seminole Heights and South Tampa to newer builds in Brandon, Wesley Chapel and Land O' Lakes. Many have a screened lanai, which gives a Maine Coon outdoor air without the mosquitoes and the snakes. Make sure the screen is in good shape and the door latch is secure.

Orlando

Orlando has many apartments and gated communities in Winter Park, Lake Nona and Kissimmee, along with plenty of family homes with pool cages. A pool cage acts like a giant catio, but check for torn screens and open pool gates. Households with theme-park schedules or frequent trips should line up reliable cat care for a social, people-loving breed.

Jacksonville

Jacksonville is huge in land area, with older homes in Riverside and Avondale and newer subdivisions in Mandarin, Ponte Vedra and the Beaches. The climate is a touch cooler than South Florida, but summers are still brutal. Oak and pine pollen in spring, plus humid air year-round, make regular grooming and clean bedding useful.

What Catches Florida Maine Coon Owners Out

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and Florida households should have a plan long before a storm appears. Keep a large carrier, a week of food, water, medications and copies of vet records ready. A Maine Coon is heavy, so practice carrying the carrier. Find out which shelters and hotels take pets. Do not wait until the stores are empty.

Heat, humidity and the thick coat

Heat is the big issue for a long-coated cat in Florida. Keep the air conditioning on, serviced and set to a steady temperature, and keep the cat out of sunrooms and lanais at midday. A damp, humid coat mats quickly, so comb regularly, and ask a groomer who knows the breed before you consider shaving. Lanais and pool cages heat up fast on summer afternoons.

Fleas, mosquitoes and heartworm

Florida's warm weather lets fleas live outdoors year-round, and mosquitoes spread heartworm to cats. An indoor cat is not safe from either one. Talk to your vet about monthly prevention that covers fleas and heartworm, and check your Maine Coon's undercarriage and britches, where fleas hide in thick fur. Treat every pet in the house if one gets fleas, since eggs hide in carpet.

Everyday Life With a Maine Coon in Florida

Life with a Maine Coon in Florida is mostly about the air conditioner. The breed's coat is water-resistant and dense, built for cold, but a cat kept indoors at a steady, cool temperature does fine. Shedding is spread across the year, with a heavier blowout in spring, so combing a few times a week with a steel comb and slicker brush keeps loose fur off your furniture and the coat in good shape. Give the cat a tall, sturdy tree near a window, but not one that gets hours of direct sun. They are social and chatty and follow you from room to room, so long days alone are hard on them, and a second cat or a dog works for many families. Florida kids and Maine Coons usually get along, as long as the kids are taught to be gentle and the cat has a high place to retreat.

Florida Questions, Answered

01

Can Maine Coons live in Florida's heat?

Yes, as indoor cats in a cooled home. They do not do well outdoors in the summer or in any space without air conditioning. Keep the thermostat steady, provide fresh water, and comb the coat. If the power may go out during storm season, have a plan for cooling and a place to go.

02

Should I shave my Maine Coon for summer?

Most owners and groomers do not recommend it. The coat has a protective role, and shaving can lead to uneven regrowth. Regular combing to remove loose undercoat does more to keep a cat comfortable. If matting gets out of hand, ask a groomer or vet who works with long-haired cats for advice.

03

Do I have to drive to California to collect a kitten?

No. The roughly 2,640-mile drive from Miami is not needed: a flight nanny carries the kitten on board in an approved carrier and hands it to you at your airport, or you collect it in San Diego and fly back with it on your own ticket.
